Sequoia China’s Neil Shen Rises to No. 1 on 2023 Forbes Midas List
Neil Shen, the founding and managing partner of Sequoia China, has been named this year’s top investor in the 2023 Forbes Midas List. This marks his fourth time taking the top spot, having previously been knocked off twice before. With investments in Chinese unicorns Meituan, Pinduoduo and ByteDance, he has made a total of twelve appearances on the Midas list. In previous years, he ranked second in 2021 and third in 2022.
Forbes believed that as the world’s most valuable startup at $220 billion, controversial social app TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, where Shen is a board director, still did more to propel investors onto the Midas List than any other company, helping five more investors onto the ranks.

Sequoia Capital dominates the 2023 edition of the Midas List with 10 investors, making it the investment institution with the highest number of members on the list. China’s representation has decreased from 17 to 15 members this year. Notable Chinese residents on the list include Richard Liu, a founding partner at 5Y Capital, Zhen Zhang, founder of Gaorong Capital, and Anna Fang, partner and CEO of ZhenFund, among others.
Produced in partnership with TrueBridge Capital Partners, the Midas List has long tracked venture capital’s ebbs and flows as the definitive ranking of the top 100 tech investors. To qualify, investors are ranked by their portfolio companies that have gone public or been acquired for at least $200 million over the past five years, or that have at least doubled their private valuation since initial investment to $400 million or more over the same period.
